When that bottle you've been saving breaks
After doing some wine shopping this morning, I was down in the cellar loading up a rack when suddenly a bottle leapt from one of the shelves. Before I could react, I watched as a long brown bottle of Trust Cellars 2006 Riesling fell to the floor, shattering with a horrifying sound of breaking glass.
For over a decade of collecting and storing wine, I have yet to drop a bottle or have one fall off a shelf in my cellar. My first reaction was to look at the label to see what I had lost, a Trust riesling, another bottle of which we enjoyed with dinner last fall. My next thought was remembering a conversation I had with Steve Brooks, the winemaker at Trust, about him no longer making riesling.
As I watched the puddle of Trust riesling form at my feet, a voice inside my head was screaming, "Noooooooooooo!".
The smell of this riesling wafting up from the floor was absolutely delightful to say the least. In fact, even after several hours, my cellar still has this faint floral, tropical aroma that reminded me of that first bottle of Trust riesling. Even still, I would trade that smell for the chance to have a glass, let alone a full bottle, of this terrific wine again.
While sulking over this loss and seeking solace by blogging, I just learned from reading Paul Gregutt's blog that Steve reconsidered his decision and has released a Trust 2008 Riesling, which I am going to have to get my hands on soon.
And to play it safe, I will definitely buy more bottles this time around as well as a few rubber mats to put under my wine racks.

Thad, Sorry to hear about your loss. Indeed, Steve Brooks is still making Riesling and the 2008 wine is a knock-out. Posted some quick thoughts about it on Washington Wine Report. Will give a more expansive description when i get my WW Spring Release report out in June. The 2008 will definitely make you forget that broken bottle quickly. (BTW, I live in fear of what you described happening).
