Biggio Hamina 2007 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley

biggio-hamina-pinot-noir-07.jpg

After so much similar tasting Oregon pinot noir these last few weeks, the Biggio Hamina 2007 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley (12.5%) was a welcome and delicious departure in style and substance.

As mentioned in yesterday's post, I was eager to finish off Round 2 of the 2007 Oregon pinots and move on to something else due to many of these wines starting to blend together due to their similarities. I had yet to realize what this last wine would afford in terms of its contrast with the other 17 bottles in this round.

The Biggio Hamina was unique from the first glass poured to the last sip at dinner. In the glass, it was a very light, translucent red, delivering notes of bright strawberry fruit, floral notes, and these ethereal hints of perfume. On the palate, flavors of fresh picked, sliced strawberries were evident, with a delicacy that made this wine truly unique.

We paired the '07 Biggio Hamina tonight with a bolognese dish served on fresh pappardelle pasta accompanied by an organic butter lettuce salad tossed in olive oil and red wine vinegar. Whenever Kari makes her traditional bolognese sauce, she freezes several small portions so it can be thawed and heated up on demand.

The Biggio Hamina not only complemented our meal, it pretty much stole the show. Every sniff and sip of this wine revealed something new and intoxicating as each glass was poured. I found the unique style of the Biggio Hamina 2007 Pinot Noir to be sufficient reason to stock up on more. At $24, this is a standout Oregon pinot noir, one that I look forward to enjoying again in the years to come.

And one other important note regarding it's alcohol level. On first glance, the light color and low alcohol might suggest this wine as being lacking, but looks can be deceiving as evidenced by my experience above. Furthermore, it's low alcohol provides an opportunity to enjoy a second, if not a third, glass without getting loopy as is the case with many other higher alcohol wines.

I haven't tried Todd's wine from 07, but just stumbled on your blog and find it pretty interesting. Can't say I agree with you about the 07 Sharecroppers. I have consumed more bottles than I care to admit of that wine and considering the price point, I haven't found many Oregon Pinots I like better. But thats the great thing about wine, not many are viewed the same way universally.

Maybe you will see my wine in Seattle one of these days. Anyway, I will keep in touch with your blog.
