WIDWD: A Pair of Evesham Woods

What I Drank With Dinner (WIDWD) With each of bottle of Evesham Wood wine enjoyed at our table, I am becoming a more devout fan of this Oregon producer. Back in October, I opened an Evesham Wood 2006 Pinot Noir and was quickly taken with this wine along with their story. So it was with some anticipation that I opened two bottles of Evesham Wood during the week, a 2005 Le Putis Sec Pinot Noir and a 2006 Blanc du Puits Sec Pinot Gris/Gewurztraminer. Both wines are comprised of fruit from Evesham Wood's estate vineyard, Le Puits Sec, which is...

WIDWD: Caramba Carabella!

What I Drank With Dinner (WIDWD) A couple of weeks back, Kari prepared a wonderful dish of slow cooked chicken thighs in chipotle sauce, which were served with steaming tortillas along with fresh tomatoes, avocado, and cilantro. I decided to pair the meal with a Carabella 2005 Pinot Noir (14.2%), a bottle we had enjoyed very much while dining at Tilth restaurant. The Carabella is a full bodied pinot noir and matched very well with the spicy chicken. The '05 Carabella is made of five pinot noir clones sourced from their 27 acre estate vineyard, which is located in...

WineFoot.com is off to a sprint

Slowly but surely, there are more folks in our state blogging about Washington wine. This is something very much needed when you think about the lack of coverage our state receives in the blogosphere. Which is why I am so excited about WineFoot.com, a new wine blog that literally burst onto the scene last month and has been running at a fast pace ever since. In just two months, WineFoot.com has been covering a variety of wines, tasting events, winemakers, industry news, and other related topics. And there's a growing library of videos and photos making this blog unique through...

WIDWD: Wines That Didn't Make It To The Table

What I Drank With Dinner (WIDWD) There's a saying, "life is too short to drink bad wine". Over the last week, life started to seem way too short, as there were several white wines that never made it to our table. Instead, each one ended up getting tossed down the drain. It was strange to have gotten three strikes in one week on these wines, all of which came from Oregon and Washington. If I open a bottle that is corked, tainted with Brett or has some other fault, then I will seal it back up and return it to...

WIDWD: Cooper Mountain 2003 Reserve Pinot Noir

What I Drank With Dinner (WIDWD) Last Saturday night, we were entertaining my brother-in-law, Kris, who was visiting from London. Kari cooked up a big batch of pasta all’ amatriciana (tomato-based sauce with pancetta) along with a leaf lettuce salad in an olive oil and wine vinegar dressing. To accompany the meal, we served a bottle of wine that Kris's mother had brought us a while back, a Cooper Mountain 2003 Estate Pinot Noir. It offered a pleasant surprise for Kris to learn that the wine in his glass was a gift from his mother. The Cooper Mountain pinot...

Taste Washington is April 5 & 6

Last Thursday evening, the Washington Wine Commission (WWC) held a media reception to promote the upcoming Taste Washington on April 5 and 6. The event was attended by various media folks including those covering wine in the traditional press as well as a few bloggers. It was hosted by Robin Pollard, Executive Director, and Shayn Bjornholm, MS, Education Director, both of the WWC. Robin, Shayn and other members of the WWC were very hospitable, making their way around the room introducing themselves and offering their support toward media coverage for Taste Washington. As a blogger, it was interesting to...

WIDWD: Seven Hills 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Seven Hills Vineyard

What I Drank With Dinner (WIDWD) I am becoming a big fan of Walla Walla Valley fruit. Red or white, I enjoy the flavors, the acidity, and many times the lower alcohol in wines sourced from this valley. I have become especially fond of cabernet sauvignon from Walla Walla Valley, with Pepper Bridge and Amavi being two of my favorite Washington cabs. While shopping at Esquin Wine Merchants a few weeks back, I picked up a bottle of Seven Hills 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Seven Hills Vineyard for $31.95. Last Saturday night, we grilled a couple of fillets along with...

Reducing bias in wine reviews

Andy Perdue of The Wine Knows recently posted about his approach to reviewing wines, which he conducts through "blind" tastings. Without knowing the winery or winemaker behind each wine, Andy prefers to conduct his tastings in two ways, either "single blind" (e.g., wine variety or style) or "double blind" (e.g., wine color only). His post sheds some useful light on how some reviewers try to minimize bias, that is any subjectivity or prejudice that might skew a rating higher or lower. Reducing bias is a key focus in any market research, as you want to generate data and insights that...

WIDWD: King Estate 2006 Domaine Pinot Gris

What I Drank With Dinner (WIDWD) Last Wednesday night, I came home from work and could immediately smell these wonderful aromas emitting from the kitchen. As soon as I spotted the stove, I saw Kari's red Le Creuset, a pot that always brings incredibly delicious, slow cooked meals to our table. Tonight's dinner was a pork shoulder roast braised in olive oil and garlic and then slow cooked for a couple of hours in chicken broth and white wine. I couldn't wait to sit down and celebrate this meal! The wine used with the pork? A King Estate 2006...
